You might be asking ...

Who is eligible for the GNI Fellowship?

You are enrolled in or accepted for an accredited higher education institution in the same country as your newsroom of choice; or if you are from or currently living in the country where the newsroom is based. This includes graduate, master, and PhD students, as well as students pursuing technical or professional certificates.

You may submit only one application in the country in which you’re currently studying, living or where you are from. In the application form, you will also have the option of indicating a second and third preferred option, in case of not being selected by your main newsroom of choice

We accept both full-time and part-time students, as long as the candidate is enrolled or accepted in an accredited higher education institution in 2020.

Recent graduates who finished their studies in 2019 are also eligible to apply.

You must be legally allowed to work in the country where you apply.

Are there any age restrictions for participants?

Yes. You must be 18 years of age or older.

I am an international student. Can I apply?

Yes, as long as you are enrolled in a higher education institution based in the country of the newsroom you choose to apply for.

*Students enrolled in Austria, Germany or Switzerland can apply for any of the organisations based in these three countries.

I will graduate during the GNI Fellowship. Can I still participate?

Yes, as long as you are enrolled in a higher education institution based in the country of the newsroom you choose to apply for.

If you graduated in 2019, you are also eligible to apply.

What kind of documentation do I need to provide?

You should be prepared, upon request, to provide the European Journalism Centre or your host organisation with transcripts from your accredited institution as proof of enrollment or admission status.

Who will I report to at my host organisation?

Fellows will be assigned a mentor at their host organisation. You will, however, have the opportunity to work with several staff members over the course of the programme.

What is the relationship between GNI, the European Journalism Centre and the host organisations?

The Google News Initiative (GNI) provides funding. The European Journalism Centre (EJC) coordinates the programme and provides administrative support. The host organisations do not represent the views or opinions of GNI/the EJC and cannot bind Google/the EJC legally.

What if I have a question that is not answered in this FAQ?

You can reach out to us via [email protected].

What if my country isn’t listed?

If your country isn’t listed, the programme is not yet available in your area. It is therefore not possible to partake in the GNI Fellowship programme, but keep an eye out for future years or check other worldwide fellowship opportunities.

In what language can I submit my application?

You are free to submit your application in English or in the language of the news organisation you are applying for.

Will I get paid if I'm selected for a GNI Fellowship?

Yes, all the fellows will be remunerated for their work and to help cover expenses. The exact amount will be at the discretion of each news organisation.

Does the COVID-19 situation has any effect on the Fellowship programme?

The European Journalism Centre and Google News Initiative have been closely monitoring the widening COVID-19 novel coronavirus outbreak and we are taking several measures to help protect the health of all people involved in our programme and events around the world.

In light of this, we have decided the following:

The deadline for the open call for applications has been postponed for two weeks. This means students/recent graduates can submit their application until April 14th (CET/CEST, midday Brussels time).

The GNI Fellowship Bootcamp has been postponed until after Summer, but we are currently working on the organisation of an online event to prepare the Fellows ahead of their placement in newsrooms. This online event will take place in June 2020 (date TBA).

The Fellowship placement will start a month later, between July - October 2020. It is between the Fellow and news organisation to decide the specific dates of the Fellowship placement.

* Please be aware that news organisations may change the period DURING WHICH the Fellowship will take place due to the COVID-19 situation.
